MAI KHAO BEACH

Another relatively unknown Phuket beach among most tourists and travelers is Mai Khao beach. This lovely Phuket beach is somewhat quiet and isolated due to its location which is far away from most popular Phuket resort areas. Mai Khao beach is however one of the largest Phuket beaches as it is approximately eleven kilometers in length!

Mai Khao beach is mostly undeveloped as it is part of the Phuket Sirinat National Park which limits most types of development at Mai Khao beach. This is why many local residents and Phuket expats enjoy spending time at Mai Khao beach as you can enjoy the nature and its beauty without any noise or pushy vendors. As the beach at Mai Khao is rather long, it is possible to spend all day on the beach at Mai Khao without seeing anyone walk past.

Mai Khao Beach Location


Mai Khao beach is located on the North-West Coast of Phuket and is actually located not too far from the Phuket International Airport. You will however generally not have much noise issues from arriving or departing airplanes. Mai Khao beach is located right next to Nai Yang Beach so you should always follow the signs directing you to Nai Yang beach. Once you enter the Nai Yang beach area then you simply take the beach road north bound which will take you straight into the Phuket Sirinat National Park and the Mai Khao beach area. You can either take the south bound coastal road from the Phuket International Airport or take the north bound coastal round coming from the more popular Phuket resort areas of Surin Beach, Patong beach and Kata beach and simply take the exit when you see the Nai Yang beach sign.

Mai Khao Beach Activities


Don’t expect the same type of beach activities at Mai Khao beach as you would encounter in the most popular Phuket beaches such as Patong beach and Kata beach. As Mai Khao beach is part of a Thai national park, the type of activities that can be offered at Mai Khao beach are rather limited. Some tourists however seem to enjoy this as they prefer a quiet and more virgin style Phuket beach. During the high season you can swim at Mai Khao beach without a problem however during the monsoon season which is during the Phuket tourist low season there can be problems with dangerous tides for example. There are at times also decent waves for surfing so if you enjoy surfing then Mai Khao beach could be an option for you. What makes Mai Khao beach somewhat unique is the fact that the giant leatherback turtles lie their eggs at Mai Khao beach. If you are lucky then you can see these beautiful creatures in their natural surroundings which is an amazing experience.

Mai Khao Beach Resorts and Hotels


There are only a few accommodation options in the area of Mai Khao beach as the amount of development is limited by its natural park status. There is another alternative accommodation option at Mai Khao beach which might be of interest to you. There are camping options at Mai Khao beach and the Phuket Sirinat National Park. Prices are very inexpensive and many western backpackers seem to prefer this type of accommodation at Mai Khao beach.

Mai Khao Beach Restaurants


The only large restaurants located at Mai Khao beach are the restaurants that belong to the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa. There are a number of small Thai style outdoor restaurants which are located along a certain stretch of beach at Mai Khao. Nearly all these restaurants serve basic Thai dishes and fresh Andaman seafood dishes. You can enjoy a very good meal at these small Mai Khao beach restaurants for relatively little money as most of these restaurants are visited by local Thai residents. If you are spending the day at Mai Khao beach and require using a bathroom then you should use one at one of these Mai Khao beach restaurants and bars.....
